The essay reflects on some cultural premises of the practice of duelling, in their political implications or in their psychological consequences, identifying in this sense a crucial phase in the first decades of the nineteenth century. It is in fact in this period that also from a cultural point of view a profound revolution takes place – from the aristocratic world of the ancien régime to the bourgeois world of the full nineteenth century – which radically modifies questions of honor, and therefore, indirectly, the practice of duelling. On the basis of the most up-to-date critical bibliography, the essay investigates the partic- ular Italian situation, shedding light on the interactions and distinctions between Roman- ticism and the Risorgimento, and questioning how much the “duel” is linked to categories referable to Romanticism and how much to categories referable to the Risorgimento. Both in the private sphere and in the public sphere, in fact, Romanticism and the Risorgimento do not always coincide.

Abstract
Both in the private sphere and in the public sphere, in fact, Romanticism and the Risorgimento do not always coincide.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
