Abstract chapter 8 Energy expenditure (EE) of the critically ill patients presents variationts during the course of the disease. The EE of the critically ill is influenced by many individual and iatrogenic factors and different metabolic phases. Therefore, measuring the EE may be favorable to reduce the detrimental effects of under or over nutrition. Thus, all recent societal guidelines recommend Indirect Calorimetry (IC) use to determine energy needs in mechanically ventilated patients. The Indirect Calorimetry consents to misure real energy expenditure of the patient, avoiding side effect of the artificial nutrition in the three phase: early acute phase, late acute phase and recovery phase in which metabolism is deeply variated.
