Repeated episodes of tonsillitis and pharyngitis affect many children, to the extent that they appear a part of their everyday life. Whilst antibiotics are effective in reducing symptoms in the short term, it is frequent for tonsillitis to reappear. The reason for this recurrence is that a number of pathogenic bacteria are able to form a biofilm within the moisture-rich and warm tonsillar crevices which protects the pathogen and allows it to reinfect the host [1].
