The exercise of transposition is an unmissable opportunity for ethics. Precisely because it requires a shift away from the individual perspective and transposes us into a different point of view, it provides the means to overcome a solipsistic attitude and to forge authentic relationships. Making use of the empathic tool of transposition is, however, a choice. The self chooses to shift its perspective, to open itself up to a new way of seeing the world. It chooses to attune itself to the emotional state of the other. It allows resonance, as Lipps argues, to become an affinity for a new perception, for an ‘other’ experience. Furthermore, by choosing to open itself up to a different way of seeing things, and precisely through that diversity, the self comes to experience its own reality. In this way, it adds to the overcoming of solipsism the new experience of the self from the other’s perspective and, as Stein emphasises, through the difference with the other.
