This essay proposes some theoretical and critical notes on the human body understood as a complex cultural heritage, relating practices of visualization to the processes of meaning-making that determine its cultural value. Starting from an etymological and conceptual analysis of the term “body,” the essay investigates how, when it enters the domain of visualization, the body is transformed from a biological entity into a cultural object that is exhibited, interpreted, and mediated through multiple dispositifs and gazes. By applying the classification criteria commonly used for cultural heritage, the body is examined as material heritage in its declinations as a sacred object, an object of study, and a mechanical object, and as intangible heritage in its functions as a gestural, emotional, and informational actor. Particular attention is devoted to strategies of making visible, ranging from anatomical illustration to diagrams, from museum display to the performing arts, highlighting their active role in the construction of the meanings attributed to the body. Through an analysis conducted through the critical lens of visual culture and the discussion of selected case studies of contemporary exhibition practices, the essay demonstrates that the representation of the body is never neutral, but always implies ethical choices. Recognizing the body as cultural heritage therefore means critically interrogating the dispositifs of visualization and assuming awareness of the construction of the gaze on the human body in contemporary culture.
