Abstract

Approximately 40% of vascular surgical practices are determined by vascular emergencies, hence a major volume on this subject is a valuable addition to the literature. As a multi-contributor project, this text is able to draw on the expertise of a wide number of internationally renowned practitioners, providing a comprehensive compilation of urgent and emergency vascular problems, the majority of which will be applicable to every vascular surgical practice. The text provides extensive coverage of the more common vascular pathologies such as acute limb ischemia, venous emergencies and arterial occlusion, while also devoting considerable space to less frequent, yet equally challenging situations, such as blunt trauma of the carotid artery and stab wounds to the base of the neck. A number of new insights are provided, for example, the utility of endovascular approaches to the rupture of the abdominal aorta as opposed to the traditional surgical intervention. Authors also explore the contribution of underlying pathologies such as peripheral aneurysms and diabetes to emergency situations. A range of surgical, endovascular and thrombolytic therapies are covered, alongside an appreciation of the wider bioethical concerns relevant to vascular emergencies. Table of Contents Section 1: Carotid Arteries. Emergency reconstruction of the ICA. Blunt trauma of the internal carotid arteries. Stab wounds at the base of the neck. Section 2: Aorta. Acute occlusion of the abdominal aorta. Rupture of AAA. Why is mortality the same since 30 years? AAA: should endovascular treatment be the first choice? Urgent open surgery after endovascular AAA repair. Type B dissection: indications and strategies. Aortic type B dissection: endovascular treatment. Techniques and results. Acute complications following coelioscopic surgery. Traumatic rupture of the thoracic aorta. Section 3: Upper Limbs. Acute ischemia of the upper limb. Acute complications of the AV fistula for hemodialysis. Section 4: Lower Limbs. Arterial emboli of the lower limbs. Acute arterial thrombosis of the lower limbs. Mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment. Acute thrombosis of peripheral arterial aneurysms. Rare causes of acute ischemia of the limbs. Acute problems of the diabetic foot. Endovascular treatment of arterial blunt injury of the limbs. Endovascular approach of acute arterial occlusions. Section 5: Veins. Acute thrombosis of iliocaval veins. Acute thrombosis of axillary and subclavian veins. Acute treatment of aortocaval fistula.
