This chapter deals with the creation of general relativity by Albert Einstein in the context of the problems opened by special relativity and the criticism of Newtonian mechanics by Ernst Mach. The style of the reconstruction is both historical and critical, taking into account both the intentions of the main actors and our present understanding of the problems they were struggling with, including the technical mathematical developments.
