This chapter describes the development of scientific and observational cosmology during the first 6 decades of the 20th century; it adopts a historical and critical approach, and gives enough mathematical details for the competent reader to reconstruct the crucial steps. The emphasis is mainly on relativistic cosmology, but some alternative theories (particularly the steady-state cosmology) are also discussed.
