Abstract

The text designed a new Rural Development model facing the new scenario for rural areas: the new challenges coming from the globalization and the new societal needs (food security and safeness, climate change, eco-sustainability, inclusive development). It is argued that Rural Development would be driven by a new socio-economic paradigm as the one referring to Eco-Economy. In the text, thee need and consequences of the transfer of Eco-Economy paradigm to the development of rural areas and agri-food sector, are deeply analyzed. The Eco- Economy model is based on the interrelationships among different sectors that create multi-actors and multilevel local web and develop new local activities and markets in a more sustainable way. The multifunctional farm play a central role in the construction of the web and in its unfolding process. The text focus on the interrelation between this new model of farming and the development of the eco-economy in the European Regions characterized by different rural areas classified according to agriculture relevance for the area and the degree of diversification of the local rural economy. The role of new on farms activities, and the relationship urban rural in the different areas are used to explain the existence of different webs that converge towards the eco-economy model. The text is the introductory chapter of the second book produced in the framework of the Etude (Enlarging Understanding of Rural development) Research project funded by the EU 6th FP.
