A systematic lead/scintillating fibre calorimeter radiation hardness study was recently initiated in the framework of the LAA Project at CERN. Abstract

A systematic lead/scintillating fibre calorimeter radiation hardness study was recently initiated in the framework of the LAA Project at CERN. The 0.5 GeV LEP injector LINAC is used as a radiation source and a PS beam serves as a probe to assess the damage. Initial results indicate the presence of a carrier (probably a gas) spreading the radiation damage far from the exposed region, Some comparisons between different kinds of fibres are made. Finally, the performances of a lead/scintillating fibre calorimeter after a radiation damage equivalent to a four years running at LHC at rapidity two are predicted.
