This article investigates the implications for translation and translators of the digital revolution and the appearence of new text forms. In particular, the electronic texts available on the Internet are different from both printed texts and other multimedia texts because they are hypertextual, dynamic and interactive, and technologically complex. From the point of view of translators, the nature of electronic texts poses the problem of which translation mode is more appropriate for which text. The translation practices which can be adopted for online documents are described, from those involving critical and experimental hypertexts, to human quality translation of informative texts and advertisments, to so-called indicative translation produced by machine translation systems.

Abstract

This article investigates the implications for translation and translators of the digital revolution and the appearence of new text forms. In particular, the electronic texts available on the Internet are different from both printed texts and other multimedia texts because they are hypertextual, dynamic and interactive, and technologically complex. From the point of view of translators, the nature of electronic texts poses the problem of which translation mode is more appropriate for which text. The translation practices which can be adopted for online documents are described, from those involving critical and experimental hypertexts, to human quality translation of informative texts and advertisments, to so-called indicative translation produced by machine translation systems.
