Socioeconomic conditions have been found to be related to self-rated health, which is an established predictor of morbidity and mortality. In this paper we investigated the associations between socio-economic status and self-perceived health among older people in European countries, who most probably face health problems. We analyzed four indicators of health status based on self-reports concerning physical and mental health, chronic disease and disability, using the Share data. Results showed that poor self-rated health was most common among people who experienced economic hardship and with a low-educational level. Women living alone tended to report poor health, confirming the association between social isolation and poor health. Moreover, results from logistic estimations, with fixed-effects included, evidenced the presence of some variability across the European macro-regions considered.
