This review examines the phytopathological situation of sunflower in Italy from 1988 to 1997 with detailed concerns to biotic and abiotic diseases. Among the fungal diseases Sclerotium bataticola and Phoma sp. are the main sunflower diseases. Numerous other fungal diseases were reported during this decade but the pathogens were sporadic and their infections were no particularly relevant. The main abiotic diseases were: head alterations (caused by low temperatures), herbicide (linuron+trifluralin and imazametabenz), hail injures and also damage by high temperatures.
