A displacement triangulation laser sensor has been used to dynamically measure the tyre crushing of a car in motion. The optical features of different materials that form road paving, as well as wet asphalt surfaces, different colour planes and various slopes of the reflecting surfaces with respect to the incident laser beam have been considered as interfering inputs. The different slopes have been considered to provide for paving irregularities. The sensor has been statically and dynamically calibrated. Surfaces used to calibrate the sensor have been directly taken from road paving. The laser sensor has been mounted on the side of a car tyre moving at different speeds, the tyre being pumped up at different pressures. The measurement chain allows to acquire and elaborate the triangulation sensor signal and to measure the rotation speed of the wheel by means of a proximity sensor.
