We study anti-plane shear motions for general and restricted Hadamard materials. Restricted Hadamard materials are obtained from the general strain-energy function characterising Hadamard materials by considering a constitutive parameter, say beta, to be equal to zero. Pure anti-plane shear motions are admissible solutions for the class of restricted (beta = 0) Hadamard materials. If beta not equal 0 a pure anti-plane motion may be sustained in Hadamard materials only if it is coupled with an in-plane motion. If we assume that beta is small, say of order epsilon < 1, then by using a perturbative approach it is possible to write down an approximate set of equations to determine these in-plane motions. In so doing it is also possible to find some analytical solutions. We also determine the in-plane motion associated with a Love wave in a general Hadamard material.
