Although infrequent, poisoning by toxic plants are an important part of veterinary practice. Clinical symptoms which occur in such poisonings are often comparable to many other diseases: generalized clinical manifestations that often involve multiple organs causing a state of malaise. There are various degrees of toxicity in relation to the different botanical species, the nature of the toxic substance, amount ingested, age, sex, and also animal’s general conditions. The influence of these factors and in many cases the lack of pathognomonic signs, make the diagnosis of these poisonings to be difficult. In order to make an accurate differential diagnosis, knowledge of this branch of veterinary toxicology, too often omitted, becomes very important.

Abstract
Although infrequent, poisoning by toxic plants are an important part of veterinary practice. Clinical symptoms which occur in such poisonings are often comparable to many other diseases: generalized clinical manifestations that often involve multiple organs causing a state of malaise. There are various degrees of toxicity in relation to the different botanical species, the nature of the toxic substance, amount ingested, age, sex, and also animal’s general conditions. The influence of these factors and in many cases the lack of pathognomonic signs, make the diagnosis of these poisonings to be difficult. In order to make an accurate differential diagnosis, knowledge of this branch of veterinary toxicology, too often omitted, becomes very important.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
