Aiming to develop broccoli synthetic varieties (Syn) for organic agriculture (OA) we initiated a breeding program from a landrace (LR). A Syn0_8C (i.e. 8 components) was obtained through a farmer assisted selection program that mirrors the original LR. The diversity level of the Syn0_8C was assessed by using 14 putative neutral microsatellites markers (SSR) and 7 SSR related to genes. Four commercial F1 hybrids were also assessed. In spite of the strict selection procedure applied by the farmer to yearly reproduce the landrace and obtain the Syn0, the detected diversity level was high. The F1 hybrids always showed a lower number of alleles and of effective alleles than the Syn0_8C. The possible reasons for these genetic outcomes (i.e. SSR position in the genome, farmer selection methods and transposable element role) are discussed
