The research presented in this paper addresses the realisation of a software, built on an Open Source platform, which is used for developing and optimizing helical and spur cylindrical gear. A design platform for gear design has been developed. It includes all the principal gear designing phases : from tooth profile optimization, allowances of all gearbox components, structural inspection under determined load conditions, power loss evaluation, coding and description of the choices undertaken up to the workshop cycles and technical drawings. The intuitive graphical user interface and the capability to view results sets and relative changes in real-time are undoubtedly helpful for the designer. In this paper we will trace an explanatory example of the platform which has been realized.
