We report on a novel strategy for the implant of human pancreatic islets which, upon immunoisolation in selective permeable and biocompatible microcapsules, are deposited within a co-axial, artificial vascular prosthesis, directly anastomized to blood vessels. This approach virtually requires no immunosuppression of the recipients so that transplant of the islets across histocompatibility and species barriers is possible. Preliminary clinical results of encapsulated human islet vascular grafts in a non-immunosuppressed diabetic patient and dogs are described.

Abstract

We report on a novel strategy for the implant of human pancreatic islets which, upon immunoisolation in selective permeable and biocompatible microcapsules, are deposited within a co-axial, artificial vascular prosthesis, directly anastomized to blood vessels. This approach virtually requires no immunosuppression of the recipients so that transplant of the islets across histocompatibility and species barriers is possible. Preliminary clinical results of encapsulated human islet vascular grafts in a non-immunosuppressed diabetic patient and dogs are described.
