Introduction: The Italian Society of Psychiatry conducted a study finalized to get awareness about the problem of Psychiatry in jails and prisons. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in jails and prisons as well as the procedures and the possibilities to organize psychiatric care and to define diagnostic-therapeutic strategies and pathways shared by the Mental Health Departments and the University Psychiatric Clinics. Materials and methods: We collected data about the psychiatrist and the psychiatric visits in the first five working days of May 2007 with of a schedule of 31 items. Results: From the datasets derives that the 24% of prisoners requires a psychiatric visit.
