The town of Amelia, an Umbrian municipality located in the province of Terni (central Italy), has ancient origins and is notable for its mighty defensive walls built with large polygonal stone blocks. Following the collapse of a part of the wall which occurred in January 2006, a project was undertaken to monitor deformations with integrated geomatic techniques in some zones deemed to be at risk, with periodical assessments performed to check on its stability. The present work summarises the results of the assessments carried out, with particular focus on the various methodologies adopted and the achievable level of accuracy. Moreover, from the analysis of the maps and the historical information available on the site, together with a critical analysis of the findings, it is hoped that information may be obtained that may reveal the possible reasons for the collapse.
