Pyodermatitis-pyostomatitis vegetans and anti-BP180 autoantibodies: a casual association?

Pyodermatitis-pyostomatitis vegetans (PD-PSV) is a rare mucocutaneous inflammatory disease1 , characterized by vesicular, pustular, exudative and vegetating plaques, which often involve the scalp, face, axillae and genital regions. Multiple erythematous small pustules and widespread erosions, creating the typical appearance of the "snail tracks" are often present in the oral mucosa. PD-PSV is frequently associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly ulcerative colitis (UC)2 . A seventeen-year-old boy presented to us due to worsening of relapsing stomatitis (7 months duration), characterized by confluent erosive lesions with the typical shape of "snail track", covered by vegetant pseudomembranes, affecting all the oral mucosa except for the tongue (Fig. 1).
