Cable dynamics is a widely explored field in the technical literature. Particularly, the mechanics of cables is caught either by numeric or analytic models that are able to predict the nonlinear dynamic response of these structural elements with the desired level of approximation. However, efforts are still required in the field of cable vibration mitigation to conceive economical, feasible and robust control strategies. In the present paper the feasibility of a hybrid control solution for cable vibration mitigation is investigated through a campaign of laboratory tests. The proposed control policy combines a distributed passive solution with an open-loop actuation. Preliminary results, obtained by using simplified numeric models, are discussed at first. Afterwards, the results of the experimental tests, conducted on a physical cable model, are presented. The final goal is to evaluate the potentialities of the proposed approach and to discuss the possible future developments of this study.
