This paper discuss the impact of fiscal consolidation policies on health resources in some Western European countries. It focus on the Greek crisis and the effects of a high level of unemployment on the social tragedy of people without health coverage. The paper reviews the weaknesses of Greek health care system, the need of reforms, and the negative implications of austerity programme imposed by the Troika for health system performance and on population health. It also emphasizes that the issue of healthcare sustainability should be assumed with strong constraints as a political priority of European governance and health goals should not be subordinated to other macroeconomic objectives.
