Feline injection-site sarcoma (FISS) is an aggressive subcutaneous tumour developing a variable period after vaccination. It is believed to arise as a result of proliferation of fibroblasts and myofibroblasts at sites of chronic inflammation induced by injection. Histologically, FISS is characterised by inflammatory peritumoural infiltration, proliferation of atypical spindle cells and multinucleated giant cells. Gelatinases and TIMP-2 are enzymes pivotal in extracellular matrix remodeling and therefore in tumour invasiveness. SMA expression is reported in myofibroblastic cellular phenotype of human soft-tissue sarcomas, where it is associated with a favorable prognosis. Aim of this study was to investigate different macroscopic, histologic and immunohistochemical features of FISS to evaluate their usefulness as prognostic indicators of recurrence.
