The Etruscan Volumni Hypogeum represents one of the most spectacular archaeological sites in the Umbria region (Central Italy), with several graves dug in the Pleistocene fluvial-alluvial sediments. The Hypogeum is a typical example of archaeo-geosite where archaeological and geological details converge, making it easily accessible to a wide audience. The Hypogeum also offers a unique opportunity for a three-dimensional reconstruction of deposits, constituted by different sedimentary bodies. Moreover the investigation allows expanding the knowledge on the sediments on which Perugia is settled. This archaeo-geosite, thus, also plays a key role in the reconstruction of palaeogeographic evolution of the area. The geometry of the sand and gravel bodies, as well as their lateral and vertical distribution, are crucial for the excavation of the tomb itself and for the realization of the friezes. The geological reconstruction also allows explaining the location of Hypogeum in the Necropolis of Palazzone, and compared to other Etruscan sites on the Perugia hill. The Volumni Hypogeum archaeo-geosite is a multidisciplinary laboratory, providing research opportunities in several fields, as well as to a wide cultural exploitation.
