Copal is the Spanish word used to describe resins from different plant genera (Protium, Bursera, Pinus). Mexican copal derives from several Bursera spp., from Protium copal, some Pinus spp. (e.g. P. pseudostrobus) and few Fabaceae spp., and it has been used for centuries as incense for religious ceremonies, as food preserving, and to treat several illness. The aim of the review is to analyze the chemical composition and the biological activities of commercial Mexican Bursera copal.
