Because it is impossible to restrict the study of the landscape to the narrow paradigm of a single discipline, an holistic approach is certainly needed. This is the premise from which this paper follows, whereby the authors attempt a diachronic and multidisciplinary interpretative reading of the Umbrian landscape. Such a reading involves geological, historicalartistic, geographical and rural-economic skills. This paper aims to offer an original contribution to the most important stages of the historical evolution of the Umbrian landscape.
