This essay analyses the notion of fatherhood in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and in Ulysses. In particular, it focuses on two different kinds of fatherhood in relation to the character of Stephen Dedalus. The first is Simon’s fatherhood as seen in his role as Stephen’s biological father. The second is Leopold’s fatherhood as evidenced in his wish to be Stephen’s father.
