Dany Laferrière is an author of Haitian origin with a vast literary production. He joined the Académie Française on 28 May 2015. In our essay, we present the third translation of one of his works published in Italy by La Tartaruga – Baldini & Castoldi. The volume in question was originally titled "La Chair du maître", which was translated into Italian as "Verso il Sud", a translation which is noticeably faithful to the title of the film adaptation. We analyse and comment on the most interesting translation choices present in the work, from the viewpoints of both lexicon and syntax.

Abstract

Dany Laferrière is an author of Haitian origin with a vast literary production. He joined the Académie Française on 28 May 2015. In our essay, we present the third translation of one of his works published in Italy by La Tartaruga – Baldini & Castoldi. The volume in question was originally titled "La Chair du maître", which was translated into Italian as "Verso il Sud", a translation which is noticeably faithful to the title of the film adaptation. We analyse and comment on the most interesting translation choices present in the work, from the viewpoints of both lexicon and syntax.
