Abstract

With the increase in the world population, the consumption pattern changes day by day on the other hand generate more and more wastes in the waste stream leading to the problems in waste disposal. Different countries handle waste management issues in different ways, while the sustainability becomes more deeply embedded in the fabric of society and the economy. In the modern society, the land filling activities are undesirable, though many developing countries are still practicing and developing new landfill sites. Landfill does not support the resource conservation. For efficient resource conservation, the 3R concept needs to be implemented through Reduce, reuse and recycle. Recycling of waste enhances the resource circulation and efficiency of resource utilisation reducing the waste streams for the ultimate disposal to landfill sites. Recycling of wastes in some way or other, efficient or inefficient, has been in practice all over the world. This study discuses some of the benchmark practices in different countries in Asia, South America, Europe and Africa. The study will also compare the sustainability of the recycling practices and analyse the resource efficiency in respective Countries.
