This paper presents an overview of the recent advances in the field of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) filters with compact size. The proposed structures exploit different solutions to reduce substantially the footprint of the filters, including the use of folded SIW, half-mode SIW, and quarter-mode SIW cavities, as well as the use of mushroom-shaped resonators. While these solutions preserve most of the advantages of SIW structures (including the low losses and easy manufacturing), they provide a size reduction up of 50% to 75% compared to the analogous components implemented in conventional SIW structures. The design rules are briefly discussed, and the design and experimental verification of several prototypes are presented.
