OBJECTIVES. The aim of the study is to describe a dental treatment in a patient with beta-thalassemia major who underwent a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).MATERIALS AND METHODS. A case of a 4-year old child with beta-thalassemia major before HSCT is presented: odontogenic infections were identified at the oral examination and their treatment was necessary to minimize the risk of infectious complications after HSCT.RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS. No complications developed at the end of dental treatment, with good results at 3 months after transplantation. Evidences in literature suggest the necessity for a focus on oral health in these patients, especially when HSCT is needed.
