Candida bloodstream infection is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Prompt and appropriate therapy as well as source control are pivotal management measures, especially in frail patients in Internal Medicine wards. An increase in the survival of critically ill patients has led to an increased use of central venous catheters and peripherally inserted central catheters. We have therefore evaluated the incidence and risk factors of candidemia in an Italian university teaching hospital (Pisa Hospital) and compared these between the General Internal Medicine wards and Intensive Care Units (ICUs).

Abstract
Candida bloodstream infection is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Prompt and appropriate therapy as well as source control are pivotal management measures, especially in frail patients in Internal Medicine wards. An increase in the survival of critically ill patients has led to an increased use of central venous catheters and peripherally inserted central catheters. We have therefore evaluated the incidence and risk factors of candidemia in an Italian university teaching hospital (Pisa Hospital) and compared these between the General Internal Medicine wards and Intensive Care Units (ICUs).File in questo prodotto:
