Simultaneous rainfall analyses using AMSR-E passive microwave measurements and thermal infrared measurements from MODIS on board the spacecraft AQUA are presented for several rainy events over the Mediterranean area and, particularly, over the Trasimeno lake, in the central Italy. The performances of the algorithm for rainfall identification and for the rain rate retrieval from thermal infrared channels are compared with the rain rate retrieval from microwave brightness temperatures and with ground-based raingauge measurements acquired in the Trasimeno lake area.
