This article investigates the relationship between the study of international relations and network analysis, a relatively recent research methodology aimed at deepening the understanding of any system of relations between multiple actors variously interconnected. According to some scholars, network analysis can help us better understand the interstate system starting from the reconstructed bonds between states, viewed as isolated "nodes" of a single global network of international relations. In the following pages we will focus at first on the theoretical foundations of network analysis, and then, by means of examples taken from the most recent literature on the subject, we'll try to show how the network approach has been used for studying international relations, in order to assess the real contribution it can provide with respect to this field of study.
