The paper focuses on the calibration of partial factors of safety by means of reliability analysis. A first attempt is given in order to calibrate static and seismic partial factors of safety for ULS geotechnical design, based on reliability concepts. It is shown that, in order to provide a similar safety level for static and seismic conditions, it is necessary to sensibly reduce the static partial factors of safety, and that such reduction must be a function of the probability of occurrence of the seismic event. An example is given for a cantilever embedded wall.

Abstract
The paper focuses on the calibration of partial factors of safety by means of reliability analysis. A first attempt is given in order to calibrate static and seismic partial factors of safety for ULS geotechnical design, based on reliability concepts. It is shown that, in order to provide a similar safety level for static and seismic conditions, it is necessary to sensibly reduce the static partial factors of safety, and that such reduction must be a function of the probability of occurrence of the seismic event. An example is given for a cantilever embedded wall.File in questo prodotto:
