This paper is a resume of the funerary data coming from the excavations of Area G South of Tell Mardikh performed between the 1979 and the 1984. In this area twenty-seven pit burials dated to the Middle Bronze Age I-II have been discovered, showing particular features in the funerary assemblages. Starting from the Baffi’s division of the burials in two groups, connected or not to private buildings or working areas on the southern slope of the acropolis, this paper points to recognize the meaning of this cemetery area, inside an overview of the funerary landscape of the Old-Syrian Ebla.

Abstract

This paper is a resume of the funerary data coming from the excavations of Area G South of Tell Mardikh performed between the 1979 and the 1984. In this area twenty-seven pit burials dated to the Middle Bronze Age I-II have been discovered, showing particular features in the funerary assemblages. Starting from the Baffi’s division of the burials in two groups, connected or not to private buildings or working areas on the southern slope of the acropolis, this paper points to recognize the meaning of this cemetery area, inside an overview of the funerary landscape of the Old-Syrian Ebla.
