Objectives: to demonstrate, through the experience in the province of Siena, that the integration of vigilance and control with prevention/promotion of health, safety ad ergonomics in the workplace is possible and effective. Methods: coordination of vigilance and control with the activities of assistance, training and information to the companies were guaranteed by the Sezione Permanente and the POLO for the Promotion of Health, Safety and Ergonomics in the PMIs of the Province of Siena. The POLO, was established in 2006 and financed by the Tuscany region. In this committee are present: the Local Government, the Local health Agency, the Siena Regional School for construction, the Tuscany Region, the European Network for the Promotion of Health and all social stakeholders: local trade unions, employers' associations. Results: over 10 years, POLO has facilitated the implementation of numerous initiatives in support of health promotion in workplaces such as: application of the "Feedback Method" to machines used in industry, construction and in agriculture (woodworking machines, forklifts, telehandlers, combine harvester, etc.);Information and training initiatives, especially for workers' representatives for security, on the main aspects of prevention, promotion of health, safety and ergonomics; Activities in the field of health promotion in the workplace, in collaboration with ENWHP, whose delegates were hosted in Siena in 2015, which led also to the adhesion at the WHP regional project http://www.regione.toscana.it/lavoraresicuri/whp) of two major enterprises (http://www.regione.toscana.it/lavoraresicuri/whp) . With the development of projects related to smoking and nutrition (http://www.pranzosanofuoricasa.it/it/news/20-evento-alla-mensa-trigano-spa); application in 32 building sites of the Good Practice "Good Practice of Casole d'Elsa", whose effectiveness has been demonstrated with constant monitoring over 16 years. Conclusions: the POLO experience made it possible to create an effective organizational model based on the participation of all stakeholders to improve the health and safety in the workplaces and gave the possibility to link Siena with other regional, Italian and European realities. This experience can be considered as an example for the prevention of occupational hazards, the promotion of well-being of workers in a context of quality production.
