Starting from the etymological meaning of the word krisis – to take decisions – the paper analyses how the concept of crisis develops in the European literature between Nineteenth and Twentieth century. Such development concerns in particular the characters of some novels, such as Gide’s "The Counterfeiters", Moravia’s "The Indifferent Ones" and Broch’s "The Sleepwalkers", who lose their agency and capability to make choices for their own life and destiny.
