This study was carried out on 402 yearling beef bulls, where one half were semen collected by artificial vagina (VA group) and the second one by transrectal massage of the ampullary region (MR group). The objective was to evaluate the effects of two different methods of semen collection on semen traits. sperm concentration was lower in bulls of MR group compared to VA group. Furthermore, total sperm motility was lower in the MR group compared to the VA group, even if it was comparable to mean value of other beef bulls. Semen collection by MR of the ampullae seems to be suitable for breeding soundness examination, even if it leads to a slightly decrease in semen quality, mainly in terms of concentration.

Abstract
This study was carried out on 402 yearling beef bulls, where one half were semen collected by artificial vagina (VA group) and the second one by transrectal massage of the ampullary region (MR group). The objective was to evaluate the effects of two different methods of semen collection on semen traits. sperm concentration was lower in bulls of MR group compared to VA group. Furthermore, total sperm motility was lower in the MR group compared to the VA group, even if it was comparable to mean value of other beef bulls. Semen collection by MR of the ampullae seems to be suitable for breeding soundness examination, even if it leads to a slightly decrease in semen quality, mainly in terms of concentration.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
