The study was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of a biotechnique called “Mussispace®”, used for the control of the varroa mite. The increased space between combs (9 vs. 10 combs) facilitates the grooming of worker bees. The biotechnique (Thesis A), was compared with treatments with oxalic acid on hemicellulose strips (Thesis B) or thymol (Thesis C). The number of mites that died when the “Mussispace®”was applied, was similar to that obtained with the oxalic acid treatment but was much lower compared to the thymol administration. In February the number of fallen mites was high after oxalic acid was dripped between the combs. The “Mussispace®” biotechnique should be integrated with a soft pharmacological treatment.
