Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become one of the most important diagnostic techniques of our time. When it is performed correctly, it offers numerous advantages and possibilities with virtually no side effects. However, the examination times are quite long and the wide range of sounds and noises, accompanied by physical restrictions can make the MRI particularly stressful for children. The aim of this article is to present a MRI preparation project in Umbria with 66 children (age 3-14, average age 7.5, SD 2.55; 63% males). Of the prepared children, 61 successfully completed MRI without sedation. The quality of the images obtained was similar to that of other programs reported in the literature and no effects related to age or duration of the scan on the quality of the obtained images were found. The MRI preparation program represents a significant example of collaboration between the University, the Local Health Authority and voluntary associations, and is able to generate significant savings in terms of economic and time.
