Abstract

During the 18th century, the complex and dynamic field of colour was the object of tireless research. The studies of Pierre-Joseph Macquer (1718-1784) show the progress of knowledge, the evolution of technical processes and the use of new substances in the emerging field of silk dyeing. The palette of colours was enriched, thus enabling an interesting naming process and even terminology creations to designate new nuances without confusion or ambiguity. In the same way these notions about colour were changing, new terms were also created. This article aims to examine the chromatic terminology in the art of silk dyeing from a corpus collecting three texts by Macquer. Terms and terminological phrases were extracted and then studied from different angles (way of creation, domain or time) and perspectives including lexicalisation.
