The Decree Legislative, 4 July 2014, n° 102 of realization of the European directive 2012/27/UE about energetic efficiency, introduces an obligation of an energy audit for some typologies of companies of the industrial, civil and tertiary sectors. The subject companies that need to adhere to this are: companies known as "large companies" and companies with a high energy consumption. Both are forced to perform an energy audit by December 5th, 2015 and every subsequent 4 years. This paper will focus on the energy audit of the waste-to-energy plant of Arezzo that uses urban waste, compostable waste and prunings. This plant has received, in 2017, the certification of a "plant with recovery of energy (R1)". In 2018 the waste entering the plant was 94,978.14 ton, of which 45,068.77 ton was incinerated allowing a production of energy equal to 18,803.10 MWh. At the end of the audit it was possible to calculate benchmarks to compare with those referenced in the document "Brief on Waste Incineration, 2006". The indexes found are the followings: consumed energy = 99.6 kWh/ton, produced energy = 417.209 kWh/ton, sold energy = 317.61 kWh/ton. This study, is very important because it will allow ENEA (Ente per le Nuove Tecnologie e l'Ambiente) to calculate future specific benchmarks, which at the moment are not updated for waste to energy plants as they refer to the year 2006. The ENEA, therefore, thanks to this diagnosis and the others received, will be able to calculate the benchmark for the new energy audits, which will be prepared in 2023.
