Abstract

The future energy system aims at being green, efficient, decentralized, and democratic towards sustainable economy and climate neutrality. In this view, energy communities are novel legal, technical and social entities that involve citizens’ participation in the energy system as prosumers with the main goal to provide environmental, economic and social benefits for the community rather than profit making. Following the revision of the European Directives that foster renewable energy production, in recent years, energy communities have started developing across Europe achieving promising results. On the other hand, Italy has just recently laid the foundations towards the spread of renewable energy communities thanks to the publication of “Decreto Milleproroghe” and the establishment of the first energy communities. However, further progresses are still needed in terms of energy technologies and services and operational guidelines for the design of energy communities to achieve this key energy and social transition.
