Abstract

In the early centuries of the early Middle Ages the number of literate women is very low (we remenber Baudonivia and Dhuoda), as well as that of women able to write letters or compose short poems. An important change occurs during the sec. X, when the first great medieval poetess explodes, Rosvita of Gandersheim. However, Rosvita is not an isolated phenomenon, but the most mature fruit of a political-cultural movement that concerns the most authoritative Ladies of the Ottonian dynasty, all literate and endowed with a high-level culture: queens, empresses and duchesses (Matilde of Ringelheim, Gerberga queen of the Western Franks, Adelaide of Burgundy, Teophanu empress and Hadwig of Swabia), but also abbesses, such as Matilde of Quedlinburg, Matilde of Essen and Gerberga II of Gandersheim.
