This article focuses on John Hallowell’s political thought. In particular, it deals with Hallowell’s criticism of liberal ideology taking into consideration the author’s works of the 1940s. Special attention is dedicated to The Decline of Liberalism as an Ideology (1943) and to the difference between integral and formal liberalism. Hallowell’s position is analyzed through the lens of history of political theory with the objective of highlighting its historical dimension in the context of American political thought and American political science. I argue that during the twentieth century Hallowell’s analysis of liberalism is a significant contribution to important areas of ethics and politics and to Christian conservatism.
