Four fertilizer N rates ( 0, 50, 100, 200 kg N ha-1 ) were broadcast at transplanting on a field grown processing tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., cv. PS1296 ) transplanted on May 24th, 1997 at a density of 3.2 plants m-2, 0.90 m row apart. Crop growth and N accumulation, PAR interception, and leaf photosynthetic activity were determined. Increasing N rate increased crop N uptake, N-concentration of dry matter, LAI and light interception but decreased the fraction of sunlit LAI. Amax, apparent quantum yield and dark respiration rate were linearly related with leaf N-concentration. Radiation use efficiency was slightly affected by N availability.
