In the present paper the role of ambient vibrations on the serviceability and safety of buildings is reviewed. Special attention is paid to the critical analysis of the procedures for assessing the acceptability of the vibrations levels which are suggested by several International Codes and Recommendations. Some im-provements to make “objective” and “reproducible” the analysis are suggested. The application to some Italian buildings allows to discuss advantages and open problems of the proposed methodology.
